UK’s ‘biggest’ public sector strike begins

30 November 2011 Last updated at 04:30 GMTHelp

A 24-hour strike by public sector employees over changes to their pensions has begun, and is set to be the UK’s biggest stoppage in a generation.

Workers began to walk out at midnight and the unions say around two million people will take part in the industrial action, causing disruption to public transport, schools, courts and council services.

The government wants workers in the public sector to pay more in pension contributions and work longer before they can retire.

Phil Bodmer reports.

The following people feature in this report:

Francis Maude MP, Cabinet Office Minister

Brendan Barber, TUC General Secretary

UK strikes: crowds & chaos expected this week at UK airports

Flying to London this week? Travellers arriving at London Heathrow and the UK’s other international airports this Wednesday, 30 November, should be prepared for a long wait at the UK Border Agency passport control.

British border agency and customs staff — and up to three million public sector workers in total — will be on strike for the day over pensions and other issues.

Public servants from other areas are being drafted in to check passports, but the BBC reports that this will be limited to European passports and electronic gates.

Business travellers entering on Australian or other foreign passports will be stuck in the extra-interminable queues reminiscent (but potentially worse) than strikes in June this year.

How bad are the queues likely to be? Travel blog Jaunted has some shudder-worthy shots of June’s queue — seventeen barrier switchbacks deep.

Which unions will be walking out tomorrow? Workers ranging from lollipop ladies, cleaners and refuse collectors to tax inspectors, Government lawyers and diplomats will take part in the week’s pensions strike, reflecting the huge range of professions affected by the bitter dispute.

Giant public sector unions including Unison, which has over a million members, will join forces with smaller organisations such as the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, which represents around 17,000 NHS staff.

Teachers, civil servants, nurses, social workers and builders will also take part in rallies and protests across the UK.

We have identified over 50 branches of 30 unions – including seven not affiliated to the TUC – whose members have voted to strike. They represent represent 2.6 million workers – and we have managed to break down the vote for most of the unions on our list: 2.1m ballot papers were sent out with an average ‘yes’ vote of 77.31% and a turnout of 38.55%

Fullscreen version

Here’s how the 645,076 yes votes we’ve found – an underestimate based on the unions which would reveal the figure – break down. All returning majorities range from less than 60% to 92%.
